God's Love

1 John 4:7-14

Many times we focus on God’s love and neglect his righteous wrath against sinfulness. We like God’s love because it is safe and comfortable, and it is not in anyway conflicting with our ideas of God. We think of God as forgiving and loving. Who does not want that kind of God? But we often overlook what the demonstration of God’s love cost him. Or we overlook why we need God’s love. However loving God may be without His grace we can never experience His love. In our passage today we will see the origins, the example and the demonstration of God’s love.

First we see the origins of love (vv. 7-8). Now we are not talking about the romantic love that gives warm and comfy feelings, but we are talking about love as in a love for all people. I love you my brothers and sisters in Christ. This is the love such as love your neighbor as yourself. But John begins today’s passage by saying, “Beloved, let us love one another.” It is a suggestion of instruction. Basically, this is not an option that he gives to us, but it is a statement of instruction. He says, let us love one another. Let us demonstrate love and care and compassion and service to one another because these are actions and attitudes of love. Without compassion then there is no love demonstrated to those who are hurting and grieving. Without service, there is no love demonstrated to those who are unable to help themselves. But then John says, “for love is from God.” Let us one another because love comes from God. Well, so what? This is the church. These are people who are born again. These are people who claim to be servants and submitted to God himself. So God is the source of love and as he says following, “everyone who is loves is born of God and knows God.” If God is the source of love and we are of God then we will be able to love as God loves. Without God we could not demonstrate the love that God would have us to demonstrate. You see, God in us will perfect us. How many of us have ever seen love demonstrated imperfectly? How many of us have ever seen someone who was just truly not loved? Maybe a lady whose husband just treated her with the least respect possible. Or a child whose parents would not pay them any attention. This a demonstration of imperfect love, but through Christ we can demonstrate a more perfect love because with him in us we are being perfected. The love of Christ is an unselfish and sacrificial love. Living in this kind of love is a demonstration of the knowledge of God. We are to know God, but this is more than just head knowledge but a knowing of him personally. A knowing from being with him. According to John, the only true demonstration of love is the demonstration of the love of God. We see in this section of our passage that without the love of God is a sign of our life.

We should love others because it is a sign of our salvation. Love should flow freely from us because if we are saved then His love should flow freely from us. One man is quoted as saying, “If God is the source of all love, then whatever love a man has in him comes from God; and this part of his moral nature is of Divine origin.”

Secondly, we see the example of love (vv. 9-11). Because God is love then his love has been manifested in us. It has been made real, alive. Or looking at the verse, it could be that John is more specifically saying God’s love has been manifested among us. Because he says God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. It is through Him, Christ that we can love. It is through Christ that we see love demonstrated. God so desired to love us and free us from sin that he sent Christ in order that we might be free of sin. The unique son of God came to us. This is love, not that we loved God, but that God loved us and sent his son. Christ was our propitiation for our sins. Some people say this really should be expiation. Expiation is defined as the removal of our sins. Propitiation is the removal of our sins by the appeasing of the wrath of God toward sin. Some people say well, God does not have wrath it is ungodly. How can God be angry when he tells us not to be angry? Well, God’s anger towards sin is a righteous anger that is expressed towards that which is against his nature. God’s love is manifested in the coming of his son. The demonstration of God’s love is found in Christ’s death and payment for our sins. The demand of God’s love is found in verse 11 which says that we ought to love one another because God loved us.

God sought to be known in this world by love. How can we demonstrate love towards others? God’s justice was met in his love demonstrated on the cross. How can we demonstrate that sacrificial love towards others who are in need?

Third we see the demonstration of God’s love (vv. 12-14). Verse 12 says that no one has seen God at any time. God in his essence and nature has never been observed by anyone throughout the course of history. Jesus is God but in his natural state no one has ever observed him. The verse continues, “if we love one another, God abides in us.” If we love one another then we have God, which means that God has demonstrated his love to us. “His love is perfected in us.” Again, his love is demonstrated to us. God abides in us. A personal piece of God resides in every believer throughout the course of history and the world. If we are his then we have a piece of him. This is a personal demonstration of God’s love to us. Then we see that John says, “we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.” When we become a believer and possess the Spirit of God we receive a personal gift of God’s love. Our salvation is founded in the love of God. Without God’s love there would be no salvation. If God did not love us, then He would have left us to our own end of eternal death, but because He loves us, He has sought to save us and part of the work of God in us is the work of the Spirit and his indwelling in us. We are recipients of God’s personal gift to us, the Spirit. In verse 14, “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son the Savior of the world.” Have you seen the Son? What he appears to be saying is that it is known that Christ came to be the Savior of the world. It is for all people to know that Christ came to be our Savior. He did not come to judge the world but that through him we might have eternal life. (John 3:17) Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are a public demonstration of God’s love for us. Without his life there would be no identification with humanity. Christ came as the second Adam. Without His death there would be no forgiveness of sins. Without the resurrection there would be no promise of eternal life. Jesus did all of this publicly and is a demonstration of his love.

The Need for Holiness

1 John 3:4-10

Beginning in verse 1 John tells us that we are the children of God because of His great love for us. Then He says that we are. There is no argument in the eyes of John, and because we are the children of God the world does not know us. Have you ever wondered why we are so misunderstood by the world? It is because they do not know us. They do not understand what prompts us and encourages and gives us reason for life. They do not “know” what is on our hearts. They do not know nor understand God therefore they do not understand why we live the way we do because we live according to God and his standards which we will look at in more depth in our study today. Verse 2 says that we are children of God but what we will ultimately look like has yet to be known. When Christ returns our sanctification will be made complete. When Christ returns our inner working towards holiness will be made complete through the Spirit. Then in verse 3 he says that everyone who has the hope that they will be made like Christ will be purified, or as this verse says that they purify themselves. Not only are they made pure but they will look like Christ.

When I was looking at this passage and looking for key words, themes and any repetition throughout. I noticed and it came clear that within verses 5-10 there are three truths repeated and in the same order. In my notes for study I labeled them A, B and C. And then when they repeat it is the same order A, B and C.

The first truth we see this evening is that Christ destroys sin. Verse 4 says that everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness. Those who live in sin are those who do not live according to the laws of the land. They live according to their own laws and rules and not the laws or the law which is the true standard of action and living. Then in verse 5 we are told that Christ appeared in order to take away sins. Christ came in order to remove sin from our lives. In Him there is no sin. Therefore He was the one true and acceptable sacrifice. Then in verse 8 in the second half of the verse John tells us that the Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil, Christ came in order to remove the sins of mankind through faith in Him. He came in order to make ineffective the work of the devil in this world. The one who knew no sin is the one who can destroy sin. The word for destroy is the same word that is used where John the Baptist says I am unfit to untie his sandal. Jesus unties the power of the devil and his works. Jesus is able and has removed the power of the works of the devil. What benefits do we gain by the works of the devil having been destroyed? What does it mean for us the believer that the works of the devil have been destroyed? What rights do we have over our lives if Christ destroyed sin for us?

The second truth we see this evening is that those born in Christ are made holy. As we saw last week, there is an emphasis in our need to abide in Christ. In verse 6 and verse 9 we see the word abide. The idea is that those who abide in Christ or God are holy and possess no sin. Christ is holy because he does not possess sin or a sin nature. He does not and did not sin nor did he have anything that gave him a corrupt sin nature. Verse 6, “No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.” Verse 9, “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in Him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” There is the repeated idea of abiding or remaining in God. The idea of seeing God or knowing God. The idea of God’s seed abiding in them. If God is in you then sin cannot. What John is referring to is the idea and truth that true holiness is God abiding in you and making you new by removing and cleansing you of sin and God’s character dwelling in you. You cannot be holy apart from God making you new, You cannot be holy if your sin nature remains. You cannot be holy without God dwelling in you. According to these verses at a very literal reading says that if you sin at all then you are not saved. So if you sinned today, “Too bad. You are not saved.” In reality that is not what John is saying. One Greek word could sometimes take as many as 5 or 6 English words to translate it. What John is saying when he says, “No one who sins has seen Him or knows Him,” is that no one who has the habitual practice of sin has truly seen God. Does your life demonstrate a life of sin or a life of faithfulness? Are you 5% faithful or 55% faithful? What does your life really demonstrate? What has more control over your life, the Spirit or your natural sinful nature? Now you might be in a time of falling away and right now your life is only 5% faithful, but when you look back, at the time of your salvation did your life change and come under the control of the spirit? If yes, then you have fallen away, otherwise, you may have never been truly saved.

The third truth we see this evening is those apart from Christ are lost in sin. This may seem very simple compared to what was just said in the previous point, but it is true and needs to be reminded. In this passage John appears to be telling the believers about false teachers and ways that you can know if he is a true teacher or a false teacher. Often times a false teacher comes along and so many people would fall for his teaching. It is not that they are teaching a clear heresy but may be just leaving a little bit out or a great new twist that no one has ever thought of. He tells the believers, “The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.” In other words, look at the teacher’s life. Do they proclaim righteousness? Do they live righteously? Do they treat others in a righteous way? Do they exemplify the righteousness of Christ? When you look at their lives do you see a love of the things of this world, or do you see a love of Christ? Then in verse 8, “the one who practices sin is of the devil.” And verse 10, “anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.” Those who are not of God does not regularly, habitually live in righteousness. Those who are not of God practice sin and retain a sin nature. Their nature is sin. They may do good works but their lives are not in anyway pleasing to God because their lives are apart from him. Do you want to please God? Live in submission to Him. Abide in Him. Do you want to know where you stand before God? As said before, how faithful are you to God? Do you see just a little bit of righteousness regularly? We are told that those who sin are of the devil! Wow! What an insult. How terrible to say that about someone. Yet it is the truth. Those who are in sin and are still in their sin nature are of the devil because the devil has sinned from the beginning. He is a sinner. There is nothing good in him. Yet verse 10 says that the one who does not love his brother is not of God. So don’t love the sinners, those outside of the church because they are not of God therefore they are not your brother. Right? Wrong. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves. We are told that others will know that we are of God by that we love one another. Our love is one key aspect where the outsiders will see that we are of God. What do you see in your own life that might demonstrate a separation from God? What do you see in your own life that demonstrates a love for God? What do we see in our church that might demonstrate a separation from God? What do we see in our church that demonstrates a love for God? Are the answers to the church’s separation from God, are any of those present in your life? Might it be, that the church is separated from God in those areas because we as individuals fall short in those same areas?

Our God of Order Pt. 3

Genesis 1:14-19

Daylight Savings Time is in my opinion one of the strangest ideas anyone has ever come up with. Why do we need to change the time in order to make it get dark earlier in the day and get light earlier in the day? To be honest, I don’t like the fact that during December it is almost completely dark before 5 pm. That is just too early. It is supposed to be still light when you go to church on Wednesday nights not dark. When I moved to Arkansas for college it was strange to me how early it would get dark during the winter. Growing up in Fort Worth we were further west into the Time Zone so it would get dark later, and in Arkansas we were further east so it would get dark earlier. Then we moved to North Carolina where Wake Forest was further east in its time zone than Arkansas in Central, so it got dark earlier than where we were in Arkansas. Now here we are in the Northern Neck where we are yet further east in the time zone. Why do we do that to ourselves? Why do we really want it to get dark earlier during the winter than during the summer months? I have heard that it was supposed to help the farmers. The only way that I can think that would happen is to help them get up at the same time because it somehow balances when the sunrises, but I have never paid enough attention to know one way or the other. But who truly rules time. God has established the cycle of the day, the seasons, and the years. Through the orbit of the earth around the sun and the orbit of the moon around the earth God has established when we have summer and when we have winter. It was established by our God.

When we look at our passage today we see three facts of our lives by examining God’s creative work.

First we see that God brings order to our lives. In verse 14 we see that it says that God created lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. First God created the lights. It actually happened it took place for us to see now. The lights are there for us to see enjoy and to use according to his purpose and design. The lights are to separate the day from the night. I like order so I am thankful that God separated the day from the night otherwise we would be arguing over when is day and when is night or we would constantly have to change our schedules because day and night are constantly changing, but God created order. When we look at our world and the seasons, it is clear that there is a pattern of when it is cold and when it is hot and warm. These are in accordance with the pattern of the sun and also the titling of the earth as it revolves. In our world there is a time when you can go skiing and when you can surf. During the winter months, most people do not want to surf in Delaware, but not far away into parts of Pennsylvania during the winter months you can ski. During the winter months, the farmer can rest from planting and reaping, but come spring, the work in the fields begins again.

In Ecclesiastes 3:1 and following the Scriptures read, There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. There is a time where giving birth takes place, and dying. A time to be sad and time to be happy. There is a time to build and a time to tear down. Every event will happen and there is a time for it. This God’s created order. Imagine if there was how life took place. First you die and get the hard part over with. Your first few years are full of doctor visits and surgeries along with much medication. And as you get younger then begin to enjoy life and the traveling that takes place. And then you continue in life and go to work to be the president of a company or supervisor of a construction crew. You enjoy the seniority until someone who has been alive less time than you comes along and takes your position. You continue to get younger and lose even more seniority in the company until they tell you that you are getting too young and in two weeks you must go to school to learn your job. So your two weeks are up and you enter college beginning with your graduation. You enjoy the prestige of seniority on campus. You quickly gain the knack for all-nighters to get your senior projects done on time. As you come to your freshman year of college, you begin preparing to enter high school and start the social ladder over. You enter high school with graduation and senior skip day and all of the other crazy things high school seniors do. You enjoy being at the top of the social ladder again, and thankfully now your parents are paying for everything for you. You never knew how bad things were until now when mom and dad buy your food, gas for your car, provide a house for you to live in and even pay all of the bills. Then you finally finish high school and continue through middle school and begin forgetting how to play the instruments you once knew. What was once decent music is now terror on the ears and you are relegated to playing your trumpet in the basement. Then you reach elementary school and mom and dad do more and more for you. You quickly finish all of your school and now are a toddler again. From there you begin to forget more and more until you are an infant without any way to help yourself. Now you are just waiting for the day you are unborn.

Too bad life is not this way. You start with the worst of days and end with the best of days. In our lives there are times that we are able to bear children. In our lives, we see the normal order of when death typically occurs. In our lives we see when we become mature or at least should be mature enough and we move out on our own and start our lives of independence. In our spiritual life we often see similar patterns of growth. There is typically a time when we need the instruction and direction of mature Christians. In the life of a church, there are seasons. Often times many churches go through a time of decline and then get their bearings straight and find a renewed dependence on God. From that renewed dependence and faith in God the church goes on to new levels of growth and maturity. I see in many ways that we are waiting for something to happen. I also see that many are waiting for someone else to do it. I don’t know why this is. I don’t know if this is a lack of faith in their own abilities or if this is a lack of knowing what to do. If we want to see growth numerically we need as individuals and families to reach out to those around us who are without Christ. We as a church need to enter into a season of prayer. Prayer for God’s direction. What would he have us do? Prayer for our submission to his leading. What would God have me do? Prayer for commitment. I will do what God has called me to do.

The second truth we see is that God is our light, and we are the light of the world. In verse 3 God creates light. In this verse, God does not create the sun or moon or stars but He creates light. Some believe the light created here and the nature of this light is what we will experience in eternity when the only light we will see is the light of the glory and the radiance of Jesus himself. Now here on the fourth day God actually creates the sun, moon and stars and they are placed in the heavens. The sun is placed to govern the day by giving enough light to illuminate the world around us. The moon is placed to govern the night and there stars are there in order to govern the night. The moon informs of the passing of a month and even what time of year we are in. They literally light our world as God designed them to do so, but they also remind us of the radiance of God. The moon and stars govern the night and remind us of our need for rest, but they also remind us of God’s guidance. Many travelers used the night sky of stars to guide them in their travels at night. Many sailors would use the stars to cross the oceans. The lights are there in order to assist us in our daily living. They are to be a guide. Over time there have been other tools created in order to assist us that we often times or most of the time no longer need the stars to travel. I am thankful that when I travel at night I know which road to take and which way to turn until I get home. If I had to follow the stars, well we would have never found the Northern Neck to begin with, because I would still be lost from my first drive from Fort Worth to Arkadelphia AR for college. We have calendars and clocks. Farmers have the farmers almanac to assist them. In many ways, we no longer recognize or use the illumination the Lord has given us for the ruling and dominion over his creation.

A family was at a farm during the cool fall weather enjoying playing at a corn maze. They had waited their turn and finally they were allowed to walk through the maze and find their way out. As they began the maze they stayed together and were attempting to discover all of the dead ends they could. The children became impatient and went out on their own. As is the case, the children found the end before their parents. The wife became impatient with the husband because would not stop and ask for directions so she took off on her own and found her way out. As they waited the daughter climbed up an observation platform and found her dad three feet away from the end, but unfortunately for him the end was two rows of corn away. So she yelled at him, “Hey Dad!” He looked up and waved and continued walking. She yelled back, “Hey dad! Turn around” He did so. “Now turn right!” He did and kept walking until she told him to stop. “Now stop! Now turn right again!” He did and kept walking. “Stop! Now turn left!” He did and kept walking. As he looked up his daughter was gone. Then he heard her say, “Good job dad. You made it.”

We need directions in life. God has given us directions and the means for caring for our world and providing food by the sun, moon and stars. But in our lives God is our light. He is our illumination. He is our light on our path, and without Him, we would be lost. He is the one who directs us through His word and His holy spirit. Well, pastor, God’s Word is pretty out of date. I mean, look at what it says about women and homosexuals. What standard should we go by then? If this is God’s Word and has been for the nearly 4,000 or more years what makes it valid to change God’s Word now? If it is God’s word, then he must change in order for it to change. He will never change. His character has yet to change. For us, as God is our light, we are to be a light to those who walk in darkness. Through God’s Word and His spirit, we will guide others to Him. As a light to the world, we are to shine brightly in the world by living in submission to Him and through the inner workings of the Spirit in our hearts will guide us to holy and righteous living. We can be a light by submitting to him and: Him living through us and Him being displayed. The Spirit changing us in our character and allowing Christ to be displayed in our lives. It is through our light that others are brought to the provision they need to truly live. Without spiritual life they are not living. It is only through Christ that anyone has the opportunity to truly live and enjoy this life.

The third truth we see this morning is that God is sufficient. Notice in verses 17-18 that they are telling us what He actually did. God placed them. They give light on the earth. They govern the day and the night. They separate light from darkness. This is an actual fact of history. God created them and placed them. There is no disputing the fact that today we have a light for the day and lights for the night. There has never been a need for more lights. The only reason we need more lights in this world is because we are turning into nocturnal creatures. If we did not want to be out past dark, because nothing good happens after dark, right? We wouldn’t need lights outside. Imagine trying to sleep through the night with the brightness of the sun beating through the windows. The way that God has created us, we do not need a bright night, we need it dark. There is nothing insufficient about the light of the moon and the stars. Sometimes it is fun to be out late but in the end, it would not be quite so much fun if it weren’t dark. There is fun and excitement about being out late. Now, it is fun being out late because the boys usually sleep all the way home. The sun provides warmth we need. Even on a cold winter’s day, the sun provides warmth that we need. There are some very cold days that I get in my car and it is too warm! He placed them where they needed to be to provide what we would need. The lights that God provided for us are sufficient. He has used the lights at different times of the day in order to provide a clear differentiation of what is day and what is night. God himself is sufficient. He has revealed himself to us in His word and through His Son that His word tells us about. We have no need for more information. We have no need of archaeology proving the Bible. Through the Word of God the Spirit will convict us and convince us of the truthfulness of that Word.

In our world, there are many people who are seeking and searching for truth. There are many who are seeking and searching for answers to the big questions in their lives. What job will fulfill my life? What college should I attend? Where should I live? Who should I marry? What house should I buy? Then the big ones come, which college football game should I watch this afternoon? We ask so many questions in our lives but often we ask the wrong ones? What job will fulfill my life? Well, in the end you are going to eventually retire from your job and then you will need to find something else to fulfill your life. Ask, What will fulfill my life? The only thing in life that can ever bring true fulfillment in life is a person and that is Jesus.

Through him and him alone are our deepest needs met. Through him we find the answers to our deepest pains. And you are probably asking, Pastor, how does Jesus take care of my pain because I lost someone suddenly who was very dear to me. I still ache over that pain. Jesus said come to me all who are weary and bear heavy burdens. He carries the pain. Often times we bear pain because we think we can some how make that pain go away or we bear guilt that is not necessary. He bears our pain. Pastor, but I want a job that makes me happy. Well, God gives us contentment. He gives us the sense of satisfaction even in the most mundane and menial of jobs. Take joy in serving your Lord wherever he places you. There is fulfillment and satisfaction in mopping floors or scrubbing toilets. There is fulfillment in doing the same job and task over and over again. The fulfillment is found in trusting that in that job you are serving Jesus. Do your work heartily as unto the Lord. Col. 3:23. God is sufficient. We have no need of any other. May we live each day as a gift from God knowing that our service and devotion to him is not in vain.

If our service and devotion to him is not in vain then may we:

· enter a season of prayer.

· be a light/witness to our world.

· live as though we serve the Lord.

Brennan in Prison & Connor with a Truck

Some Quotes

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it by not dying.
Woody Allen

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns-the ones we don't know we don't know.

The Hunted Comes Back to Haunt

I don't hunt but I can imagine this would have not been a pleasant scene in our house. Some poor duck survived two days after being shot stored in a refrigerator. Now that is survival of the fittest. (though I am not advocating evolution)

The Powerful Creator

Genesis 1:6-13

Born to a Saudi family, in Saudi Arabia, and living very close to Mecca, I grew up with strict principals and traditions of Islam and the Arab culture. As a teenager I went to the mosque five times a day in obedience to my parents. One night, while I was asleep, I had this horrible dream of me being taken into hell. And what I saw there brought me real fear and these dreams kept coming to me almost every night. At this point I was really wondering as to why I should be seeing hell in this manner. Suddenly one day, Jesus appeared to me and said, "Son, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. And if you would give your life to Me, and follow Me, I would save you from the hell that you have seen."

This came as a surprise to me, for I did not know who this Jesus was. Of course, He is mentioned in the Koran in the book Surah Mariam. He is stated as one of our prophets, but not as a Savior who could save us from hell. So I started looking out for a Christian who could give me some advise about this Jesus I have seen and possibly get one of the Christian Holy Books, which I now know is the Bible. But it was a difficult task for me to get any Christian to speak to me about Jesus. As you would know, Christianity is totally banned in
Saudi Arabia and if a Christian is caught witnessing to a Muslim, he could be almost sure that he would be beheaded.

Then the Lord led me to an Egyptian Christian who was sick. I prayed for this man’s healing and this man gave me a Bible. Then I, by myself, started reading the Bible. By this time Jesus had become a close friend to me. Soon I started witnessing about the experience I had with all my family relations and friends. Soon the authorities were informed that I had converted to Christianity, and I believe this was done by one of my family members. As it states in the Koran, if someone would turn away from Islam, he is a traitor to the faith and he should be executed. So I was taken into custody and tortured. They told me that I would be beheaded if I would not turn back to Islam. But I had already made my decision that I would never turn back. So I told the authorities I’m willing to die for Jesus and that I would never come back to Islam. After much torture and imprisonment, I was sentenced to be beheaded. They gave me a date and a time and I told them, "You go ahead and execute me. I’m going to heaven to see Jesus. But I pray that what you would do to me would stay in your minds and not give you rest until you come to Jesus."

The appointed day and time came for my execution, and I was waiting with much anticipation, yet very much strong in my faith in Jesus. Generally the executions are carried out on the set time and date. But to my amazement, no one turned up. One hour lapsed, two hours went by, then it became three hours, and then the day passed by. And no one turned up. Then two days later, the authorities turned up and opened the doors and told me, "You demon! Get out from this place!" I also noticed that the main person who was determined to get me beheaded was not present when they came to release me. I asked them where this guy was. And with much hesitation they replied that his son had died on the same day they planned to execute me. Although I continue to go through much persecution, one thing I know is that the Lord’s hand is upon me.

There are some who point to the creative work and say that God created in two sections. The work of giving form and the work of filling. And that in days 1-3 we see God giving form to the work of creation and days 4-6 God is filling his creation. So today as we look at days 2 and 3 we see God giving form or shape to his creation.

There are three truths concerning God and his creation within our text. The first truth that we see is that God’s creation is a physical reality. What God created is really real. The trees, people, plants, ground, water, dirt, rocks, clouds, stars, and moon along with everything not mentioned are real. They are physically real. Who am I? Do I exist? Do I truly live? The answer is yes you and everything else does truly exist. As much as some days of life seems like a nightmare or a dream that will not end is just that, it seems like a nightmare or a never ending dream. We all exist and are real. Pinch yourself and it will hurt. I am sure you remember the times you that you hurt yourself. If you weren’t real it would not have hurt. If the material world is just an illusion then stop spending money on medical bills, it’s just an illusion. You don’t need doctors. They are not there to help. They are just stealing your money and playing into your weak mind and imagination out of control. But it is real. We do need doctors. We do hurt and we can touch and experience the touch, smell and sight of God’s creation and some of it we can taste. Look at verse 6, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters. Verse 7 tells us that it happened and gives us more detail of how it was done. Some people will tell you that this means that the earth was covered with water which is true, and that the Lord moved some of it in the outer reaches of the atmosphere and the whole earth was enveloped in water. That we do not know for certain. It makes for some good explanations of what size crops they could grow and why people lived so long. But we really do not know. Most people say that this is God creating the heavens. The expanse that we call the sky where the birds and airplanes fly and even outside of our atmosphere where the sun, moon and stars reside. Now when this was written they did not have space rockets and shuttles where they could leave the earth’s atmosphere and determine where everything was at in comparison to each other. As we see the heavens today from earth is all they knew. This expanse is likely to be what we see when we look up at the sky. The water above the expanse is understood to be the clouds. They were always there and God has held them above the expanse in order that we might be able to breathe and not be crushed by the oppression of the clouds. The clouds are real. The rain is real. And as I look out of my office window, I hope that it will snow and that too is real. I miss the snow we would get in North Carolina. It is real. You can touch it. You can crash your car into things very easily in dense fog. Because the clouds are real and when they get lazy and tired and sit on the ground, it is hard to see through them. Verse 9 says, Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place and let the dry land appear. Now, we all know that when you fall it can hurt especially depending upon where you fall from. We are thankful that the land really exists. Otherwise the gravity of the earth that does not exist would pull us into one great big ball and mass of humanity. We are able to walk, and sit and ride upon this dirt that God calls the earth. It is real along with all of the plants. We need to eat. And God has given us plants to eat. And now we also eat some very tasty animals. Especially when you grill them just right and add the right flavorings. When you think about what the Lord has done, He has given us a world to enjoy and explore. A world to provide for our physical needs. The world and his creation are real and very personal.

Mark 8:22-25 ¶ And they *came to Bethsaida. And they *brought a blind man to Jesus and *implored Him to touch him. Taking the blind man by the hand, He brought him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?" And he looked up and said, "I see men, for I see {them} like trees, walking around." Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and {began} to see everything clearly.

Matt 15:29-31: ¶ Departing from there, Jesus went along by the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there. And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them {those who were} lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them. So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. Why would the Lord make use of his time healing physical ailments if the flesh is not real? Why would he bother healing if the healing meant nothing? These were signs to demonstrate he is sent of God, but these were also acts of compassion demonstrating God’s dealings within the context and the reality of our world. He is still working today. He is still working and dealing within our world. He is still working and dealing in the hearts of people today. Is he dealing with you and calling you to himself and to repentance?

The second truth that we see today is that God provides for our needs. One commentary writer says that part of the consequence in creating the expanse between the two waters is to provide an open area for us to breathe. Without the suffocation and thickness of the clouds, we are able to breathe more freely. In verse 9 we see God separating the waters and expose the dry ground. Without dry ground we could not live. We need dry ground. We cannot live constantly in the water. Our bodies are not made to survive in water. Those who are lost at sea usually survive because they have something to float on rather than themselves floating in the water. We need water and instead of removing the water he kept the water so that we would have a source of fluids to take in, and in addition, all of the plants, the vegetation that he creates requires the use of water in order to grow. Even those plants that you rarely have to water still require some. Yet through his creative work God provides for our needs. Even in the midst of this section of his creative work he is providing for our needs. He is shaping the land that we will live on and travel, and call home. It is on this day and at this time that the Lord parted the waters to form the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers and event he Chesapeake Bay. Verse 11 tells us that the Lord planted the plants, the trees and everything that produces the food and fruits that we would one day eat. Then in verse 12 we are told that this actually took place. This is not some random act that just happened to take place within a span of billions of years and with a great and random chance. This was intentional in order to demonstrate the Lord’s provision for his creation. In order to demonstrate God’s care and concern for his creation. In order to demonstrate that God is a god who is worthy of our worship because he alone provided for our needs and caused the plants to grow and sprout and not Baal or any other god. Not even mother nature. God provides for his people. We are his people will he not care for us?!

Yesterday was one of those days. I was so pooped that I struggled to sit upright at the dining room table. It took extreme effort to hold my head up out of the soup bowl. Days like that are common for me because I have a connective tissue disease that causes chronic fatigue as well as pain.
If you've never experienced fatigue, you can't understand how debilitating it is. It's not the exhilarating tired you feel after aerobic exercising. It’s not the contented tired you feel after gardening all day. It's more of a crash and burn, hit-the-wall, feel like you're dead or dying exhaustion. I think it must be the way the coyote feels after chasing the roadrunner all day and being pulled through a wringer, hurled off a cliff, blown up with dynamite, run over by a truck, squeezed through a knothole, and then having an Acme safe dropped on his head.
Exhaustion is the burn out toddlers experience after skipping their afternoon nap. I can relate when I see a two year old in a shopping mall throw himself to the floor sobbing. There are many days I feel like doing that, but I lack the energy required to cry.
The worst thing about chronic fatigue is that even after a full night's sleep, I still don't feel refreshed. Most mornings I wake up just as tired as I was when I went to bed. Fatigue is like a thirst that is never quenched or a hunger that's not satisfied. I rarely get "enough" rest.
Though I've dealt with weakness and fatigue for years, it still frustrates me. I get angry when the most strenuous activity I can accomplish is taking a shower. And I hate disappointing others by canceling outings because I need a hoist to lift myself off the couch. It's infuriating that I can be energetic and ambitious one day while the next day every cell in my body hurts and I need toothpicks to hold my eyes open.
Thinking about this recently got me so upset it triggered a hot flash. I decided to do something about it. So I started whining.
I’ve developed complaining to a fine art, but I’ve learned that it doesn’t help the situation. In fact, focusing on the negative usually makes things seem even more miserable.
There’s a passage in the Bible about weariness. Isaiah 40:29 says God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. It says those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, run without growing weary, and soar on wings like eagles. Hmmm. I don't feel strong or powerful. I certainly don't soar, and I can't even remember when I ran last. Some days it takes all the energy I can muster just to move from lying to a sitting position. So what gives? Where's all this power that the Bible promises?
Obviously, God's not promising literal physical strength. In His perfect will, He knows that what we really need is INNER strength.
And guess what. The best way to develop strength within is to face problems without. Problems like physical ailments and fatigue. Shucks! You didn’t want to hear that, did you? Problems may wear down the body, but they can build up the spiritual "struggle muscles." When God gives strength to the weary, it may be in the form of perseverance, patience, determination, or greater faith. You may not run faster, jump higher, or leap
Misery Mountain in a single bound; but you can likely feel your hope and your relationship with Him grow stronger.
God provides strength to battle discouragement, strength to remain obedient, strength to keep hope alive, and strength to endure.
The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in
Corinth about how he was physically persecuted, hard pressed, perplexed, and struck down, yet he did not despair. (2 Corinthians 4)
In the same way, even though my body isn't satisfied or renewed by physical rest, my soul can be satisfied by God. He revives my weary spirit with spiritual strength.
In 2 Corinthians, chapter 11, Paul listed some of his hardships, which included being beaten with rods, shipwrecked, stoned, imprisoned, flogged, and deprived of food, water, and sleep. He'd been naked, cold, and afflicted with a "thorn" in his flesh. Even so, he could say he delighted in his weakness, hardships, and difficulties. What was that? Delighted?! That must be a typo. He couldn’t have said he was delighted, could he? Yes, that’s what he said alright. Then he went on to say, "God's grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness. When I am weak, then I am strong."
Now when I consider the attitude Paul had, even in desperate situations, I (try to) replace my whining "Why me" attitude with a more submissive "Whatever you want for me, Lord." With a new perspective, I can hope for the best; but I also prepare for the worst. And then I accept whatever God sends.
Though I am weak and tired, I can be strong in His power.

Matt 6:25-30: "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, {as to} what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, {as to} what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and {yet} your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? "And who of you by being worried can add a {single} hour to his life? "And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is {alive} today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, {will He} not much more {clothe} you? How much more valuable are you than a bird or a flower? I do know this, you are much more valuable. That is the whole point of the question. Can you not tell by just how it is asked that you are more valuable than a bird o flower! How can anyone look at a bird or other animal and then say that animal is more important than a person? Those who do have a skewed and mislead and completely distorted view of the value of human life.

The third truth we see this morning is that God created in six days. Now some of you are saying, that is a point without any contention or why even bother it is proven without any doubt that God created within six actual days. I would agree with you whole heartedly. Yet there are many theories and discussions still about the actual timing of creation. There are some who say that God created the world and that Genesis is only the recounting in more a detailed form of that creation. And that God is telling Adam how everything came into being. So the creation account of six days is really only six points of God’s telling the story. Like his six points to his sermon. There are many who hold to this view none that I know of personally, but they are out there. Then there are those who say that the six days are just six spans of time. No one knows how long these “days” are but that during this span through evolution the Lord created all things. For me this seems to imply that God created not out of nothing but out of pre-existent matter. But matter is not eternal. Only God is eternal. Not even the angels are eternal. Those are two of the opposing views to the view that the six days are actual 24 hr. days. Yet which God would demonstrate greater omnipotence the one who creates in 144 hours or thousands or millions of years? Which God would demonstrate a greater sense of worthiness of trust? Which God is worthy of worship? The one who is the direct creator and source of all of life or the one who only existed before the “creative” act? When you look at Genesis 1 we see that at the end of each day that the text says there was evening and there was morning and then the day. When it is phrased in this manner this is a direct reference to a 24 hr. period otherwise the Bible would be misspeaking in the details of what constitutes a 24 hr. day in the world of the recipients. Why would God give us his word and then describe a time reference different than what we know without any explanation? God created time for us so why would he describe it any differently than we know? I would assume trust the God who creates out of nothing, who creates directly and not merely forms and shapes, and the one who is able and did create within a period of six 24 hr. days.

Colossians 1:16: For by Him all things were created, {both} in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him. Revelation 4:11: "Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created."

Do you serve and worship the God who has created you? Do you submit to the Spirit of Truth that will make you knew and recreate your Spirit?

My eldest son e-mailed me one day. He was at work, with time upon his hands, and his heart upon God. He teaches a class at the church he attends and on this particular day, the Lord had many things running through my son's mind. Many things He was stirring up within him and many things He was revealing to him, things that the Lord wanted him to bring to the awareness of his class and to those he wanted to challenge.
God's lesson that day was to teach us who and what we really are. Not what our carnal minds think, not what friends or family think, or the perceptions of the world. No, God wanted to awaken us from our slumber. It reminded me of the passage in the bible where Jesus asked his disciples who He was, probing to see how much light had been shone into their hearts and how much light they had been able to receive.
One said one thing, some another, but Simon Peter said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Then Jesus told Simon Peter that he was blessed, for our Father in heaven had revealed this to him. That day, my son was pushing me and others to look within ourselves to see what had been revealed within our hearts, without us even being aware of it.
At first, my answer to my son only scratched the surface, which did not go deep enough, so he e-mailed me yet again, probing deeper and deeper, until the revelation within my heart surfaced. Below is my answer to him after I looked into the recesses of my spirit, thus finding the truth that God had placed inside my heart.
"Who I Am"
Well, son, you gave me a lot to think about. I guess most of us don't really know who we are, but I guess I can figure out a few things.
I was created by God. His spirit dwelt in me, even before I became aware of Him. I am eternal. I am his child, created in His image. I was created out of love, and put on earth, to learn of Him, to love Him, to worship Him, and to share this knowledge with others that are traveling the same path.
I am Eve in the garden. I am Jonah, in the whale's belly. I am Nicodemus, who needed to be born again. I am Zacchaeus in the tree. I am the woman at the well.
I am a part of God, and He is a part of me. I am housed in a wall of flesh, but I am really a spirit being. Because of Christ's love and sacrifice, I am free. I am a child of the King, joint heir, with Christ Jesus. I am God's eyes, I am God's ears, and I am God's hands. I am His connection to this physical world. I am Love.
I am this and more, but if written, that would be a book. I am still discovering who and what I am, but I think, that God has opened my eyes, and let me see the glory of His creation. me.
After my son received this final testimony as to who I am, he e-mailed me for the last time in reference to this. He was pleased that I had finally dug deep enough until I found the well of "Living Water" that was inside of me. "Keep on walking, sister," was his joyful and satisfied response.

God’s creation is a physical reality. May we seek to care for our own bodies as God’s property and not our own. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit. May we be a worthy vessel of the dwelling of God. We are not required or expected to have the perfectly physically fit body, but we are to respect our bodies and care for them in a healthy manner as we are able.

God provides for our needs. May we trust that as we are obedient and submit to His will that He we will not be separated from Him. Our greatest need as a believer is to be full of the Spirit that will recreate us and make us new, and through that we know we have salvation. It is through the clear working of the Spirit that we see the evidence of our salvation and security in Him. Without salvation we are eternally lost and condemned to damnation.

God created in six days. May we trust in Him that Satan and sin will be defeated. No matter what may happen to us in this life, God is greater than any other power or spiritual foe. Through faith in Christ alone do we gain access to eternal security. In Christ we will never again be separated from God the Father.

Eternal Life by Abiding

1 John 2:25-29

1 John 2 contains many different themes and messages that we could spend weeks looking into the entire chapter. There are warnings and instructions, encouragements and rebukes, but when you come to the last five verses there is a clear message concerning eternal life. If you desire to have eternal life then you will know it when you see that you abide or remain in Christ and He is your life’s desire.

Verse 25 clearly and succinctly reminds us that Jesus promised us eternal life. This verse refers back to John 3:15, “That whoever believes may in Him have eternal life.” Clear and precise. What more instruction do you really need? Believe in Him and your eternal life will be found in Him. It is through Christ and no other.

Then in verse 26 we begin to see John’s instructions to knowing whether or not you possess eternal life. This is not only instructions for possessing but a challenge to the believers. Are you still abiding? You once were but are you now? Do you still love your first love? Do you still practice that daily communion with your Lord? Do you still seek Him as you once did? John says that he has written this letter in order response to those who are trying to deceive them. There were many who were saying that Jesus was coming soon and then there were those who were claiming to be Christ in the flesh come again. These John refers to as antichrists. But he calls them little antichrists because they are not the one to come but resemble the one to come. But the verse says that they are trying to deceive them. It is not working. They are not deceived, but John is writing to encourage them and help them maintain their strength. What attempts to deceive the church are there in the world? What attempts to deceive the church do we find within the church as a whole?

Verse 27 begins the process of explaining how we can know if we have eternal life. John says, “As for you.” You the believer. He is talking to the church and not the world so what he is saying here is for the church. The anointing which you received is a reference to the Spirit. The prophets of the Old Testament were anointed, but today all believers are anointed with the Spirit. But he says that this anointing abides within you. It lives and remains in you. It is not leaving. This anointing is received from Christ and is not leaving. It will remain in you. And because it remains in you, you have no need of anyone teaching you. The Spirit is to convict of sin, righteousness and judgment. The Spirit is also known as the Spirit of Truth. He is the one who illuminates the Word of God to the Believer in whom He dwells. There is still need of receiving teaching through the church and other means but because of the Spirit in you, if you are properly submitted to the Spirit then you can study and interpret for yourself. There is not a need for outside help. As you submit to the teaching received through the Spirit you should become more in Christ. As you are taught and ruled by the Spirit, all of whose teaching is true, you should come to abide in Christ or remain in Him as the Spirit remains in you. The idea is that as believers we are to be constantly living with the Spirit working in us to make us new and to resemble Christ. We see our world and the problems of the world, but are we the believers becoming Christ-like and living within the world to affect a positive change? Do we allow our Christ-likeness to live and change our world? Do we allow the Word of God through the Spirit to make us into better people and then allow the Spirit to work through us to change the hearts and minds of those outside of the body of Christ?

In verse 28 John calls those to whom he is writing little children. We are to come to Christ as little children. A child is one who is young, so these believers may be new believers. Or it may simply be a term of affection by John to those to whom he is writing. He commands them to “abide in Him.” In Christ. This is an instruction. It is best for you to abide in Christ. This is what you are to do. As we are told in John 15, that we are to abide in Christ and He will abide in us. As the branches of a vine abide in the main shoot so we are to abide in Christ. Apart from Him we have no life. If we abide in Christ then when He returns and we stand before Him we will have no reason to be ashamed or to have fear. If we live in abiding in Christ then we may boldly approach the throne of Christ. By living in obedience and allowing the Spirit to lead us we will not be ashamed before Christ.

In verse 29 John shares a brief defense of the righteousness of Christ. Firs he starts with what we know and that is that Christ is Righteous. So if Christ is righteous then anyone else lives righteously is also in Christ. It is guilt by association but we are not truly guilty we are free of our guilt. Christ’s righteousness is not some arbitrary standard but an unchanging standard set in the Word of God and that the Spirit will lead us to live by.

If you want to know if you have eternal life:
Do you abide in Christ?
Does the Spirit abide in you?
Does the Spirit have the freedom to work in your spirit to make you righteous?

The Illuminator

Genesis 1:1-5

When you go to an art gallery, you are there to see art and appreciate the value of the artists time and energy and seek to understand why the art was made. There are some pieces of art only certain tastes and understanding can help you to appreciate it and the same for others. When you go to a modern art museum unless you are an avid modern art fan don’t expect to understand or appreciate the art immediately. Jackson Pollock one of the most famous modern artists produced some pieces that just about any two year old could paint but there is some message and required and acquired tastes needed to appreciate the work and its message. He would go into his studio and attach the framed canvas to the wall and open the paint can, dip his brush into the paint stand back and fling the brush in different movements and directions creating a painting of splatters and sprays of paint. Sounds like a masterpiece, but for some it is truly a masterpiece. Then there is other truly modern art called 3-D art. Using a computer a picture is made and when you stare at the picture in just the right way and long enough an image pops out that you can see. What appears to be a weird and crazy picture is in fact just the means to seeing the true picture and meaning. When you go to an art gallery and visit the masterpieces of all time, such as Monet, there is a certain message and required and acquired tastes to truly appreciate his work. The work of Pollock is appreciated by some from a certain vantage point Monet is appreciated by some with an appreciation for the clarity and beauty of the scenes. But if you were to look at a Monet from up close you would think that it is some of the worst work you had ever seen. The style of Monet’s paintings is not appreciated from up close but from standing back and taking in the scene that was created with numerous brush strokes put together. When you stand on the top of a mountain in the Rockies you are amazed by the beauty of everything together but when you stand in the midst or at the edge of the forest in the Northern Neck you are amazed at how everything works together to create a grand glorious beautiful scene. When you are in the middle of the Potomac River you see the water, some beaches, trees and open fields. All of that together creating a beautiful and glorious scene especially as the sun is setting. Yet people often appreciate the beauty without the message intended to be heard. “There is a Creator.” I still have yet to understand the message of a Jackson Pollock painting. Monet’s paintings I see the picture intended to be appreciated. In creation, I see the beauty of the life God has created, and I understand that He desires that we enjoy that creation and the life only He can give. When you look at creation, what do you see? What do you understand? What message do you take away from what you see? When we look at Genesis 1:1-5, there are three messages that we can take away from this passage.

The first message we see is that God’s creation is good (verse 4). Beginning in verse 3 we are told that God said, “Let there be light.” God spoke our world into being. Throughout Genesis 1 and the creation account whenever God creates we are told he spoke. Was this a verbal speaking or was it the kind of speaking when we say that God spoke to me? Probably the latter but the point is that God did not have to physically shape and mold it as we do a painting or a sculpture. God is powerful enough that he can merely speak things into being. It is not required that he draw up the blueprints and then have them double checked and corrected and then begin creating only to need to make corrections from that point. Notice that verse 3 then says, “and there was light.” The light appeared after God spoke it into being. It appeared perfectly. There is not a verse that tells us, “and there was light and then God tweaked it in order for the light to be according to his desire.” It was perfect and did not need corrections or additions.

Psalm 95:2-7b

Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;

Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,

And a great King above all gods,

In whose hand are the depths of the earth;

The peaks of the mountains are His also.

The sea is His, for is was He who made it;

And His hands formed the dry land.

Come let us worship and bow down;

Let us kneel before the Lord our maker.

For He is our God,

And we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.

If you are a gregarious and outgoing person there is nothing wrong with you. If you are quiet and reserved, there is nothing wrong with you. If you are in between, there is nothing wrong with you. If you are tall and skinny, there is nothing wrong with you. If you are short and round, there is nothing wrong with you. If you are the opposite of the two already mentioned, there is nothing wrong with you. If you are dark skinned, or light skinned, or anything in between, there is nothing wrong with you. If you were born in Europe, Asia, Africa, China, Australia, or South America or the United States, there is nothing wrong with you. God created each and everyone of us with a spirit and the only problem is that spirit is born in darkness and dead because of the corruption of sin. God has sought to redeem our spirits that they might resemble the original state of creation. God’s creation is good and what sin has corrupted God seeks to redeem. Our spirits can be redeemed through Christ’s shed blood.

The second message we see is that God’s creation is ordered (verses 4-5). The last half of verse 4 says, “and God separated the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night.” God not only created the light, he gave it a purpose. Not only did He create the light but he confined it to a certain area. Light does not shine continuously throughout the day from the same source. At night, there is the moon and stars. During the day there is the sun. During the day the light is brighter and more revealing and illuminating. During the night, the light is dimmer and less concentrated. Yet, God has designed and ordered the world in this manner. It is not random chaos or random chance that the world appeared the way that it did. God’s creation is how he intended it to be. God’s creation is how he intended it be for us. It is according to his will that there be light and darkness. When you look at the world and study how the animals and fish and birds survive and live there is a clear order. There are certain animals that are hunters. There are certain animals that are hunted. The same with fish. There are certain bugs that make the world a better place by eating other bugs and there are certain bugs that are eaten by fish, birds or other animals. There is a clear and consistent order

The very universe declares the glory of the Lord. Read the inspired writings of David:

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psalm 19:1-4 NIV

Pause for a moment and ponder the boundless expanse of the universe. Do so and you will catch a fleeting glimpse of His unlimited glory! In the words of David, "The universe declares it." God's creation is not limited to the earth but encompasses even the unknown universe. He arranged the stars of the heavens with His fingers. (See Psalm 8:3.) For most of us, it is difficult to comprehend the vastness of the universe.

Beside our sun, the nearest star is 4.3 light years away. So that this number does not remain just a figure, let's expound on it. Light travels at the speed of 186,282 miles per second-not per hour but per second. That is roughly 670,000,000 miles per hour. Our airplanes fly approximately 500 miles per hour.

The moon orbits roughly 239>000 miles from the earth. If we traveled by plane to the moon, it would take nineteen days. But light reaches there in 1.3 seconds!

Let's continue. The sun is 93,000,000 miles from the earth. If you boarded a jumbo jet today and traveled to the sun, your journey would take over twenty-one years! That's nonstop too! Where were you twenty-one years ago? That's a long time. Can you imagine flying that long without a moment's break in order to reach the sun? For those who prefer driving ... well, it couldn't be done in a lifetime. It would take roughly two hundred years, not including any gas or rest stops! Yet light travels this distance in a mere eight minutes and twenty seconds!

Let's leave the sun and move on to the nearest star. We already know it is 4.3 light years from the earth. If we built a scale model of the earth, sun, and nearest star, it would be as follows. In proportion, the earth would reduce to the size of a peppercorn, and the sun would become the size of an eight-inch-diameter ball. According to this size scale, the distance from the earth to the sun would be twenty-six yards, which is only a quarter the length of a football field. Yet remember, for a scale airplane to span that twenty-six-yard distance, it would take more than twenty-one years.

So if this is the earth's and sun's ratio, can you guess how far the nearest star would be to our peppercorn earth? Would you think a thousand yards, two thousand, or maybe a mile? Not even close. Our nearest star would be placed four thousand miles away from the peppercorn! That means if you put the peppercorn earth in San Diego, California, the nearest star on our scale model would be positioned past New York City and into the Atlantic Ocean a thousand miles out to sea!

To reach this closest star by airplane would take approximately fifty-one billion years, non-stop! That's 51,000,000,000 years! Yet light from this star travels to earth in only 4.3 years!

Let's expand further. The stars you see at night with the naked eye are one hundred to one thousand light years away. However, there are a few stars you can see with the naked eye that are four thousand light years away. I wouldn't even attempt to calculate the amount of time it would take for a plane to reach just one of these stars. But, think of it; light travels at a rate of 186,282 miles per second, and it still takes four thousand years to reach the earth. That means the light of these stars was first released before Moses parted the Red Sea, and has traveled a distance of six hundred severity million miles every hour without slowing down or ceasing since, and is just now reaching the earth!

But these are only the stars in our galaxy. A galaxy is a vast gathering of usually billions of stars. The galaxy in which we live is called the Milky Way. So let's expound further.

The closest galaxy to ours is the Andromeda Galaxy. Its distance from us is approximately 2.31 million light years away! Imagine, over two million light years away! Have we reached the limit of our understanding yet?

Scientists estimate there are billions of galaxies, each of them loaded with billions of stars. Galaxies tend to group together. Andromeda Galaxy and our Milky Way are part of a cluster of at least thirty galaxies. Other clusters could contain as many as thousands of galaxies.

The Guinness Book of World Records states that in June 1994 a new group of cocoon-shaped clusters of galaxies was discovered. The distance across this group of galaxies was calculated at six hundred fifty million light years! Can you imagine how long it would take to cross such a vast distance by airplane?

The Guinness Book of World Records also states that the most remote object ever seen by man appears to be over 13.2 billion light years away. Our finite minds cannot even begin to comprehend distances this immense. We've yet to glimpse the ends of the galaxy clusters let alone the end of the universe. And God can measure all this with the span of His hand! To top it off, the psalmist tells us, "He [God] counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite" (Ps. 147:4-5). Not only can He count the billions upon billions of stars, but He knows the name of each one! No wonder the psalmist exclaimed, "His understanding is infinite."

Solomon said, "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You" (1 Kings 8:27). Are you getting a greater glimpse of His glory?

Psalm 104:10-14

He sends forth springs in the valleys;

They flow between the mountains;

They give drink to every beast of the field;

The wild donkeys quench their thirst.

Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;

They lift up their voices among the branches.

He waters the mountains from His upper chambers;

The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works.

He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,

And the vegetation for the labor of man,

So that he may bring forth food from the earth.

God’s order is there for our provision. God’s order is there according to His plan. Creation is ordered according to God.

The third message we see is that God is involved in our world (verse 2). God speaks creation into being but he is active in its creation. There are those who tell you that yes God created the world but then he has left it alone. We are now left to our own choices and consequences. It is not God’s place to be involved and disrupt our world and our choices. Wow, what an uncaring God! Who would want that kind of a god? Why would we care about him if he does not care about us? There are those who say that God himself is removed from creation. He called for creation to take place but the order went down through the hierarchy of celestial beings until it reached one who was far enough removed from God but close enough to the evil and lowly material world. This way God himself is not corrupted but he was too holy to be involved in our making. What kind of a god is that? “I am willing to make you but from the beginning you will be so evil that I can’t make you.” Would you desire to serve that kind of a god? Would you be willing to submit to the authority of a god who could really care less about you? Our God was intimately and personally involved in the creation of our world and continues to be involved in our world through the working of His Spirit. We are not left to our own consequences and realities of our actions. We are left here as His people with a purpose that He has mandated. We are to do his will with him intimately involved in every aspect of that purpose and mission.

John 16:13-15 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.

The Spirit will guide and lead us as His children. He will guide and lead us from a relationship with Christ and the Father that leads to guiding us. Just as Christ was one with the Father so is the Spirit. As we are told in Matthew 28:20- and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

If God’s creation is good, may we seek to love others by serving them in their need.

If God’s creation is ordered, may we seek to live according to His Word for our lives.

If God is involved in our world, may we seek His involvement in the salvation of the lost.

Light or Darkness

1 John 1:5-10

On Wednesday nights over the next few weeks will be studying the letters of John. The SBC has what is called January Bible Study and basically it is Sunday School material helping assist in a special study. This year’s material is written by Dr. Daniel Akin. (Having spent time in the Raleigh area for seminary I always want to spell Dr. Akin’s name Aiken because of Clay Aiken and American Idol. Though the two have no relations of any kind.) this Wednesday we are looking at chapter 1 verses 5-10. I have always enjoyed the writings of John because there is so much there. I could easily break this passage down some more and have an even more in-depth study but alas time is limited.

Beginning in verse 5 John says that he and the other apostles heard a message from Christ. Having walked with Christ he could say that he heard Jesus speak it and that the message comes directly from Christ. Now John is proclaiming it to the church. First God is Light. He is truth and life and holiness and righteousness. There is no darkness whatsoever in him. There is not a hint of sin, death, filth, or corruption. What comfort should we receive from the fact that there is no darkness in Christ? What warning should we receive in the fact that there is no darkness in Christ?

In verse 6 John begins a series of warnings. And these warnings seem to have their basis in verse 5. First if we say we have fellowship with Christ but walk in darkness. If Christ is God and God is light then Christ is Light. Therefore Christ cannot walk in darkness. The image of darkness is death or not possessing life or truth. To not possess life or the truth is to be apart from Christ. There is no way to walk with Christ and to be in darkness. John says that we lie and do not practice the truth. We are evil at heart because we are not of Christ. We are not made new. To be evil at heart is to be separated from Christ by our sin nature. Christ is life and all separated from Christ is evil. Do not practice the truth. We do not seek to live in truth. We are not immersed in truth. Our daily lives are not representative of truth.

Verse 7 says but if we walk in the light. The emphasis here as in verse 6 with walk is what your daily life consistently looks like. This is not your best day but most days. Do you regularly practice the truth? Do you regularly seek to love and enjoy God? Do you regularly seek to make Christ first in your life? It is through Christ our light that we have life. The most visible sign of our life in him is our fellowship with one another. Some have said that the greatest reason the world recognized a difference in Christians is because they came across cultural and racial boundaries as one. There was a visible unity that could be seen in them that was not seen anywhere else. Do we fellowship with one another outside of scheduled church activities? Are we so busy with “church” that we do not have time to just be with each other? Do we spend time together in our little hideout without welcoming and loving those outside of Christ in order to share the love of Christ with them? If we walk in the light, then the blood of Jesus has and forever will cleanse us from all sin. This is accomplished and continuous. It has happened and continues to happen. Our guilt has been removed and so has the stain of that guilt.

In verse 8 if we say that we have no sin we are sorely deceived. If you say that you have no sin then you are deceiving yourself. You are leading yourself astray. We are then the cause of our lack of knowledge of Christ. The truth is not in us. If we say we are without sin apart from Christ then the darkness and not truth is in us. Only Christ or God has a sinless character and not us. It is his sinless character which gives us our salvation. His righteousness is imputed (definition #2) upon us. What is the advantage of imputed righteousness? Would we be able to earn our salvation even if Christ’s death just gave us a clean slate to begin?

In verse 9 John continues with if we confess our sins. John is saying here let me give you a hypothetical you might want to make reality. If you confess your sins. If you admit your guilt. If you stop being so prideful and just admit that you are weak and unable to not sin. This is what your faithful God will do for you. If you admit your weakness and faults and the fact that you are rebelling against God this is what he will do for you. In his righteousness he will do what he promised. What did God promise? He would forgive our sins. He would forget that we rebelled. Not everyone else’s who has never repented but yours. Their day will come when they repent. If you repent and seek forgiveness then your sins are forgiven. Not only will he forgive those sins we have committed, but he will also cleanse to prevent any other sin tarnishing our appearance before him. Yes we will sin and need to seek forgiveness but we will be found pure because we will be cleansed, scoured bleached by God. It is through the character of God that our salvation came and was secured. It is his righteousness and not our own.

In verse 10 to close, if we say that we have not sinned. After the previous two warnings (verses 6 and 8), he puts it quite succinctly, “You have sinned.” We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) But if we say we have not sinned then we make him to be a liar. Do you desire to contradict the word of God? Do you truly desire to make Christ appear a fool before other people? He is not a liar but you are misrepresenting him before others. But if you say that you have not sinned then truly His word is not in you.

Do you represent Light or Darkness?

Do you represent the truth of Christ or the lies of Satan and darkness?

If you were to share the gospel with someone would they see the truth presented in you or darkness?
