Review: My Bad
I finished My Bad New Year's Day. Was hoping to finish by New Year's Eve but instead we took Connor to the ER with a seriously busted lip! What a trade-off. Connor needed no stitches but it looked terrible! He was climbing into his bed when he slipped and caught his lip between the bed post and his teeth. The fun of having kids.
This will be short. My Bad features 25 years of public apologies ranging from unintended racial slurs to caught in adultery to drunken driving to using a word correctly and being misinterpreted because of people not knowing the true origins of the word. I still haven't decided what was more entertaining the apologies or the reasons for the apologies. Some people amaze me with their unwillingness to admit their mistakes, but others apologized for using words correctly. One man was forced to apologize for referring to someone using their money "niggeredly," which means miserly and has no origination with the slur for black people. I must admit I had no idea of the origins of that word either, but even when the individual attempted to defend their use of the word they still were forced to apologize.
When you reach the chapters on religious leaders and then the following chapter on politicians, there is a lot about sex. Some of the brief descriptions of why the person was apologizing was too much information for me. We are in a culture of loose sexual morals and those chapters were very telling.
On a scale of 1 to 5, overall I would give this book a 3. It is a book of quotes, so the authors writing talents really did not come into play much. If you want entertainment then read it otherwise not worth the $16.
But thanks Heather for the book. It was quite entertaining.
